Giardino degli Aranci (Parco Savello)

The fortress was of the late thirteenth century, raised in turn on a tenth-century Crescenzi castle. Of the thirteenth-century castle only some granaries and underground stores remain, the building itself having been almost entirely demolished in 1613; the traces of its towers and drawbridge are legible in the enclosing wall opposite Santa Sabina's flank and apse, which also carries marks of a late-sixteenth-century intervention by Domenico Fontana for Sixtus V. The park was laid out in 1932 to the design of the architect Raffaele De Vico. The orange trees that give it its name commemorate St Dominic, who founded the convent here in the thirteenth century; the orange tree by which he preached is kept in the cloister of Santa Sabina and is still visible through a hole in the wall of the church portico.
