Fontana dei Tritoni
Attraction · Ripa, Italy
A fountain on the piazza della Bocca della Verita whose main basin is an octagon with concave sides, echoing the eight-pointed star of the Albani arms. Two kneeling tritons carved by Francesco Moratti hold an oyster-shaped shell, and two further Albani coats of arms sit on the outer rim.
History
The foundation stone was laid on 11 August 1717, to a design by Carlo Francesco Bizzaccheri for Pope Clement XI Albani, drawing on Bernini's Triton fountain in piazza Barberini for both subject and manner. Four mascherone heads on the basin rim were removed in the nineteenth century. An adjoining public trough, built by the same pope for citizens and cattle, was dismantled in the early twentieth century during the Tiber embankment works and moved to lungotevere Aventino.
