Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace

Roma Capitale records that the church stands where Sant'Andrea de Acquarenariis stood, named for the water-sellers who drew from the Tiber and settled out the sand. By tradition, in 1480 the image of the Virgin under the portico bled after a drunken soldier threw a stone at it, and Sixtus IV renamed the church Santa Maria della Virtu; it was later named Santa Maria della Pace for the Peace of Bagnolo, which ended the war between the Papal State, Venice and the Kingdom of Naples. The dome was added in 1524 to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger's design and Carlo Maderno's altar dates from 1614. The Sibyls and angels on the chapel arch are Raphael's, 1514, and the four Prophets above were finished to his design by Timoteo Viti.
