Shakespeare Garden

Park · Golden Gate Park, California

A garden of approximately half an acre whose focal point is a brick wall containing six bronze panels with 88 floral quotations from Shakespeare's plays and a recessed case holding a bronze bust of Shakespeare. A cast iron and limestone sundial by L. Cardini stands at its centre.

History

The garden was created in 1928 from an idea of Alice Eastwood, Curator of Botany at the California Academy of Sciences. The bust was a gift from the citizens of Stratford-on-Avon, England, and is a copy of the cast made in 1814 by George Bullock. The sundial was installed in 1928.
