Soho Theatre Walthamstow

The building opened in 1930 as the Granada, with exteriors by Cecil Masey and interior decoration by Theodore Komisarjevsky, seating 2,697. It traded successively as the Granada, MGM, ABC and EMD and closed as a cinema in December 2003; its Christie organ was still in working order in the building where it had been installed when the cinema shut. The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God then bought it intending conversion, and a local campaign supported by Griff Rhys Jones and Paul McGann opposed the change of use. Waltham Forest Council bought the building from Antic in May 2019 and partnered with Soho Theatre. The Grade II* listing was made on 24 February 1987 as list entry 1065590 and amended on 5 October 2000, at grid reference TQ 37243 89311; the statutory name is 'ABC Cinema', a trading name the building carried in the 1980s rather than its present one.
