The Ancient House

The Ancient House is a timber-framed hall house built about 1435, originally with wattle-and-daub infill, at 2, 4, 6 and 8 Church Lane, E17 9RW. One list entry, Grade II, NHLE 1190795, covers all four numbers. It is divided into four dwellings and is not open to the public: this is a building to look at from Church Lane and the path to St Mary's, and the list entry records that despite conversion into four apartments much of the original timber frame is exposed.
History
The Grade II listing was made on 19 October 1951 as list entry 1190795, at grid reference TQ 37862 89158. The medieval frame stayed hidden under protective weatherboarding until a restoration in 1934, which the list entry records was carried out by Robert Fuller under the supervision of the architect C. J. Brewin as a memorial to W. G. Fuller, head of the Fuller's firm of builders. The house was restored again in 2002. It stands inside the Walthamstow Village Conservation Area, designated by the borough in 1967, a few metres from Vestry House Museum and St Mary's churchyard.
