Uccelliera, Meridiana e Giardini Segreti di Villa Borghese

Historic site · Pinciano, Italy

Two small seventeenth-century pavilions, the Uccelliera and the Meridiana, standing beside the Galleria Borghese with the enclosed gardens between them. Roma Capitale names four: the Giardino dell'Uccelliera, the Giardino Vecchio, the Giardino della Meridiana and the Giardino della Coltivazione, restored from historical and iconographic documentation, and the Sovrintendenza Capitolina records that they were brought back to their original seventeenth-century arrangement.

History

The gardens hold two eighteenth-century fountains carrying Borghese heraldry, the Fontana dell'Aquila in the first secret garden and the Fontana del Drago in the second, together with four rustic fountainlets in marmo africano of 1609 to 1623 in the second and third gardens, and a circular fountain at the fourth, on viale dell'Uccelliera.
