Villa Altoviti

Historic site · Prati, Italy

Permanently closed. This page is kept for reference.

A sixteenth-century suburban villa that stood on the Tiber bank in the Prati di Castello, on ground the rione now covers. It was demolished in 1889 and nothing of it remains above ground.

History

Gaspar van Wittel painted the riverside here, and Rome Art Lover reproduces a second Van Wittel view taken from the villa itself, now in the Galleria Palatina; the villa's river portal appears in the paintings. Italian Wikipedia records that the de Mérode consortium bought the estate, along with the surrounding vineyards, after 1870 - the purchase that put this ground into the hands that built the rione.
