A green plot of about 8,600 square metres at the IV mile of the via Appia Antica, about 500 metres from the Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella, with a three-storey main building and a smaller one. Excavation of the garden uncovered a bath complex of the middle of the second century AD, with building phases running to the fourth and traces of late-antique agricultural use, when the area formed part of the Patrimonium Appiae: dozens of rooms, mosaic and coloured-marble floors, water tanks, terracotta tubuli, the drainage system, and stretches of marble revetment and painted plaster. The main building stands on the Roman cistern that fed the baths, with a curtain wall of reused ancient material built in the 1950s. Since 22 June 2026 the complex has been temporarily closed to the public to allow restoration works on the reception building, the gardens and the baths area to begin, and no reopening date has been announced.
History
The property came up for sale in 2002 and the Soprintendenza and the ministry bought it by exercising the right of pre-emption. When it is open, the Parco archeologico dell'Appia antica sells a combined ticket with the Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella at 8 euro full, 2 euro reduced and 4 euro with the Roma Pass, valid the same day; the mausoleum itself is not in this quartiere. A park ticket at 12 euro full and 2 euro reduced is valid seven days across the Antiquarium di Lucrezia Romana, the Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella, Capo di Bove, Villa dei Quintili with Santa Maria Nova, the Tombe della via Latina and the Villa di Sette Bassi, by booking; La Mia Appia Card costs 25 euro for a calendar year.
