Ex Cartiera Latina

A paper mill turned into the regional park's headquarters, with a multimedia museum in the halls that still hold the original machinery: the Sala macchine, the Sala della macchina continua, the Sala Nagasawa and the Sala Appia. An audio guide and a QR-code route funded by Regione Lazio run through them, and paper-making workshops are run by booking. The other pavilions hold the park authority's offices, the Biblioteca della Cartiera Latina 'Fabrizio Giucca', the sala conferenze 'Antonio Cederna', a meeting room and teaching laboratories. Outdoors there are two exhibition rooms for hire, a park information point with a bookshop run by Di Natura, and the Hortus Urbis teaching garden. The river Almone runs the length of the site. Green area and car park open every day 08:30 to 17:00 in winter and 08:30 to 19:00 in summer.

History

Production on this spot goes back to 1081, to a fulling mill for wool cloth called the valca; the Capuchins used the site from the 1600s. In December 1804 it ground vallonea for tanning, in 1823 myrtle for medicines, and in 1875 pigments for ceramics. In 1919 the mill became an industrial paper works with a steam boiler and three electric motors totalling 67 amperes. The Societa anonima per azioni Cartiera Appia was formed in September 1923 and became the Societa Anonima Cartiera Latina in January 1931. In the 1930s it made quality paper for publishing from cotton rags, and from the late 1940s, the Almone having become polluted, it switched to recycled stock. The factory closed in 1986. In 1998 the site was granted in concession to the regional park.
