Auditorium di Mecenate

Historic site · Esquilino, Italy

Despite the name this is a nymphaeum: a half-sunken rectangular hall of 24.10 by 10.60 metres, with an apse at one short end, six niches a side and five more in the apse above seven curved steps faced in cipollino marble. The monument stands inside the public garden at Largo Leopardi, off via Merulana. Entry is allowed to accompanied groups only, a maximum of thirty people per visit, and booking is obligatory on 060608 between 09:00 and 19:00; individual visits are also possible on a published calendar, again by booking on the same number.

History

The hall was part of the Horti Maecenatis. It was excavated in 1874 by Rodolfo Lanciani, and the Sovrintendenza Capitolina has it in charge.
