As the twenty-fifth anniversary of Pius XII's episcopal consecration approached, the pope let it be known that he wished to use the gifts promised to him by Catholics around the world to build a church in a new Roman quarter that had no parish church. It was dedicated to St Eugene I, Pacelli's baptismal name. Work began in 1942 to designs by Enrico Pietro Galeazzi and Mario Redini, was interrupted by the war and finished in 1951, and Pius XII consecrated the church himself on 2 June 1951. The parish was erected in 1951 by the brief Petrianae navis of 16 March; it has been a cardinalatial deaconry since 1960 and has been served by priests of the personal prelature of Opus Dei since 1980. The brief Honoris pastoralis raised it to minor basilica on 23 May 1951, which the source dates before the consecration; both dates are reported as given. John Paul II visited on 3 March 1986.
