Basilica di Sant'Eustachio

The present fabric is eighteenth-century; the surviving medieval element is the Romanesque campanile built for Celestine III around 1195 and decorated with polychrome bowls. There is a single nave with three side chapels. On the counter-facade are a Maddalena penitente window, made in the last decade of the nineteenth century by Gabriel and Louis Gesta of Toulouse, and an eighteenth-century organ. Nicola Salvi made the high altar of polychrome marble and bronze in 1739, over an urn said by tradition to hold the bodies of the saint, his wife and his children, under a baldachin with stag, dove, cherubs and palms by Ferdinando Fuga. A plaque on the facade marks a Tiber flood: AN(NO) SAL(UTIS) M VD TIBERIS SERENO AERE AD HOC - SIG(NUM) CREVIT NON(IS) DECEMB(I)R(IS) ALEX(ANDRI) VI P(ONTIFICIS) M(AXIMI) AN(NO) III, which reads 5 December 1495.
