Chiesa dei Santi Benedetto e Scolastica all'Argentina

Five devotees, Laerzio Cherubini, Benedetto and Francesco Passerini, Sebastiano Masseroni and Olimpo Cistarelli, founded a company at Cherubini's house in February 1615; Paul V approved it as a confraternity on 9 November 1615 and Gregory XV raised it to a Venerable Archconfraternity on 4 February 1623. Its first official seat was a chapel inside Sant'Eustachio. In 1619 the nursino Piermatteo Lucarucci made a ground-floor room in his house available, and in 1622 left the whole building to the confraternity by will, which allowed the oratory to be enlarged into a church. The French stripped it in 1798 and the Roman Republic again in 1849, when the archive was lost; it was restored under Pius IX and Leo XIII. The archconfraternity died out in 1960 and the church passed to the Vicariate. It has no facade of its own, and the portal carries a roundel reading Divis Benedicto et Scholasticae patronis ordo et populus nursinus. The single nave, painted with false columns and inscribed Felix Nursiae tellus quae talem genuit alumnun, is divided into two bays by an arch on half-piers. The name della ciambella comes from a bronze imperial civic crown dug up in the Baths of Agrippa by Cardinal della Valle, which the diggers likened to a ring-shaped bun.
