Basilica di Santa Maria del Popolo

Roma Capitale records that the church grew in the fifteenth century out of a small chapel built at the wish of Paschal II at the expense of the Roman people, from whom it takes its name. The Cappella Chigi, second on the left, was designed by Raphael for the banker Agostino Chigi from 1513 and finished between 1652 and 1656 with Bernini's intervention for Alexander VII Chigi; Raphael made the cartoons for the dome mosaics and the design for the pyramid tombs, executed by Lorenzetto, Raffaello da Montelupo and Bernini. The Cappella Cerasi in the left transept holds two Caravaggio canvases, the Crocifissione di San Pietro and the Conversione di San Paolo, both around 1601, commissioned in September 1600 by Tiberio Cerasi, treasurer of Clement VIII, with an Assunzione della Vergine by Annibale Carracci on the altar. The Cappella del Presepio, or della Rovere, is by Andrea Bregno, late fifteenth to early sixteenth century, frescoed by Pinturicchio and his workshop. A bull of Sixtus V made the basilica one of the seven churches pilgrims were to visit, in place of San Sebastiano fuori le Mura.
