Basilica di Santa Teresa d'Avila

A neo-Romanesque church at Corso d'Italia 37, belonging with its attached curia generalizia to the Discalced Carmelites and dedicated to their Spanish foundress. The campanile is forty metres high, with blind arcading and a clock. The facade has two orders: below, a portal with a protiro on columns and a pediment; above, a small loggia of arches and colonnettes, and between two pilaster strips whose bases carry two marble lions by Armando Brasini, a rose window with Christ and the apostles under a cross-shaped window. The Carmelite Serafino Melchiorre made the bronze panels of episodes from the life of St Teresa in the doorway, with a relief of Christ blessing and St Teresa in the lunette. Inside are three aisles on piers and arches under a groin vault, confessionals by the cabinetmaker Alfonsi and a marble pulpit carved with scenes from the saint's life.
