Basilica di Sant'Agostino in Campo Marzio

The first church here was finished in 1420 and proved both too small and too low against Tiber floods. Giacomo da Pietrasanta and Sebastiano da Firenze rebuilt it about fifty years later for Cardinal Guillaume d'Estouteville and raised it above a flight of steps; the two-order travertine facade is faced with blocks that tradition says came from the Colosseum, and d'Estouteville's arms are carved in the tympanum. Luigi Vanvitelli added the lateral volutes and, between 1746 and 1750, built the new convent and cloister, recast the interior and turned the fifteenth-century campanile into a square tower. The high altar of 1627, to a design by Bernini and executed by Orazio Torriani, carries a Byzantine Virgin and Child icon from Santa Sofia in Constantinople; Guercino and Lanfranco are in the right transept chapel. St Monica and Contessina de' Medici are buried in the church.
