Bison Paddock
Park · Golden Gate Park, California
A large fenced open space in the western half of the park holding the park's bison, with a feeding shelter and isolation pens at its west end. A 1.2-acre dog training field, surrounded by a low chain link fence, lies behind the paddock.
History
Buffalo, correctly called bison, were introduced into the park in 1890 as part of a national effort to prevent their extinction, and were initially placed in a paddock near the de Laveaga Dell. The small herd was moved to the present ground around 1900. The dog training field dates from 1905.
