Case Romane del Celio

Twenty finely frescoed underground rooms beneath the basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, dated between the first and the fourth century, entered from the Clivo di Scauro, which Roma Capitale describes as an ancient Roman road and the principal axis of the Caelian, keeping part of its original course. Roma Capitale publishes the hours as 10.00–16.00 Monday to Sunday and on public holidays, with the ticket office closing an hour earlier; closed 1 January and 25 December; 10.00–14.00 on 24 and 31 December. History

Roma Capitale records that the rooms were discovered in 1887 by Padre Germano di San Stanislao, then rector of the basilica, and that they show a sequence of buildings on one site: a two-level domus with a private balneum of the early second century, an insula with street-level tabernae of the early third, a luxurious domus of the late third to early fourth, and a titulus of the middle of the fourth century.
