Chiesa di San Nicola de Calcarario

Historic site · Pigna, Italy

The remains of a church built inside the shell of Tempio A, visible within the Area Sacra di Largo Argentina, and a direct illustration of how medieval Rome reused a Republican temple rather than clearing it away.

History

The Sovrintendenza Capitolina records the first evidence of a church inside temple A in the ninth century, its dedication to St Nicholas in 1132, and its names, first de' Calcarario and then de' Cesarini. Part of the decorated twelfth-century apse survives. The Baroque church that stood above it was destroyed in the Governatorato demolitions.
