Fontana del Facchino

Historic site · Pigna, Italy

A wall fountain in the form of a porter holding a barrel, set into a building front on via Lata, and one of the Roman talking statues.

History

The Sovrintendenza Capitolina records that the fountain, anciently called the barrel or half-barrel, was made at the expense and to the design of the Florentine painter Jacopino del Conte to ornament his house on via del Corso, between 1580 and 1598, the year of his death. After the house was demolished in 1724 the fountain was reset on the main front of Palazzo De Carolis-Simonetti, and in 1872 to 1873 it was moved to via Lata for reasons of traffic. The Sovrintendenza counts it among the Congresso degli arguti, with Pasquino, Marforio, the abate Luigi, Madama Lucrezia and the Babuino.
