Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola
Historic site · Pigna, Italy
The other Jesuit church in this rione, and the one with Andrea Pozzo's painted ceiling. Roma Capitale gives opening Monday to Sunday 09.00 to 23.30, masses Monday to Saturday at 18.30 and Sunday at 11.30 and 18.30. The church's own site describes it as being in the quartiere Campo Marzio: that is the ancient Campus Martius, not the rione of the same name, and the church stands in Pigna. The square in front of it is a separate object and is not written as a Pigna place.
History
The church's own account records that Gregory XV gave the commission to Orazio Grassi and that the church was consecrated in 1722. Andrea Pozzo, a Jesuit and a painter, made the interior decorations in 1685: the false dome, the vault and the presbytery. Aloysius Gonzaga, John Berchmans and Robert Bellarmine are buried here.
