Archivio Centrale dello Stato

Historic site · EUR, Italy

The national archive of the Italian state, in a building of its own at Piazzale degli Archivi 27, telephone +39 06 545481. The institute gives its own directions as Metro B to EUR Fermi, or bus 714 to Colombo/Marconi. It holds the free permanent exhibition Lo scrigno della memoria.

History

Mario De Renzi and the studio Figini e Pollini were declared joint winners of the second competition in June 1938. The building was intended first as the Palazzo delle Forze Armate and then for an exhibition on autarky and corporatism; its foundations were begun in September 1939, and the foundations and the frame were all that stood before the war. It was completed in the 1950s under Virgilio Testa, and its public rooms, the entrance, reading room, library and conference room, were redesigned in the 1990s by Giulio Savio.
