Ex Colonia marina Vittorio Emanuele III

Historic site · Ostia Lido, Italy

A seaside children's colony of about 16,000 square metres, occupying the block bounded by lungomare Paolo Toscanelli, via Adolfo Cozza, largo delle Sirene and via Giuliano da Sangallo, with a second address at via Adolfo Cozza 7. It is built as two linked sections: the eastern one is four comb-plan buildings on a hospital model, the western one is arranged around a courtyard. An underpass was built so that the children could reach the sand directly, and Roma Capitale records that it still exists. it.wikipedia gives the present uses of the complex as a Caritas soup kitchen, a seniors' centre, the technical office of Municipio X, a chapel, a hostel, the Biblioteca Elsa Morante and the Teatro del Lido; Roma Capitale's own sheet names a soup kitchen, a seniors' centre and temporary housing for people in need.

History

A colonia marina was built here in 1916 to Marcello Piacentini's design, in reinforced concrete, with refectories, kitchens, day rooms and two large dormitories holding 80 beds in all. In 1925 the Governatorato's plan against tuberculosis proposed enlarging it, and the extension was entrusted to Vincenzo Fasolo, whose works began on 20 January 1927. The building was inaugurated on 24 January 1932 in the presence of Queen Elena, and named for Vittorio Emanuele III because the year fell in the twenty-fifth of his reign; its official name was the Ospizio Marino e Colonia di Profilassi. A chapel of 1932, also by Fasolo, belongs to the complex. German forces occupied and half destroyed it in 1943 and it stood idle until it was restored in the early 1950s; it worked as a colonia until 1983. The complex appears in Tinto Brass's film Snack Bar Budapest of 1988.
