The base was built to the design of the engineer Raffaele Tarantini and opened in 1919. Erosion forced its dismantling in 1922, and it was re-established a little further along from 3 March 1926; after 1928 it carried the name of the aviator Carlo Del Prete. Francesco de Pinedo's Two Americas cruise ended here in 1927, and Italo Balbo's Decennale squadron arrived on 12 August 1933; the base housed the Societa Aerea Mediterranea and Ala Littoria. In 1929 the futurist painter Gerardo Dottori decorated the walls of the waiting room, of which a sketch survives. German forces destroyed the main structures in 1943. From the 1960s Roman fishermen built a spontaneous settlement on the site, and about 35 dwellings were cleared in 2010. Pier Paolo Pasolini's body was found in this area on 2 November 1975. it.wikipedia records that the settlement inspired Federico Fellini, Nanni Moretti, Claudio Caligari and Pier Paolo Pasolini.
