Ostia Lido, Rome: Q. XXXIII at the mouth of the Tiber, its two towers and the seaplane base
Ostia Lido, Rome
Ostia Lido in the strict sense is Q. XXXIII, whose full name is Lido di Ostia Ponente, also known as Ostia Ponente or Nuova Ostia. It is the thirty-third quartiere of Rome, one of the three quartieri that make up Ostia, and third from last in the official series. It is the western third of the settlement, at the mouth of the Tiber, and the seafront that the name Ostia calls to mind is not in it: the pier, piazza Anco Marzio, the bathing establishments, the pinewood and both railway stations stand in Q. XXXIV Lido di Ostia Levante or in Q. XXXV Lido di Castel Fusano. What Q. XXXIII holds instead is two coastal towers, a disused seaplane base with a marina and a bird reserve laid out over it, and an inland strip of 1920s and 1930s civic architecture along corso Duca di Genova and via Ostiense.

What Q. XXXIII holds, and what belongs to its neighbours
The quartiere sets out its own edges, and they matter here more than usual, because the whole settlement reads as one town and every source says simply Ostia. To the north-west it meets the comune di Fiumicino, separated by the Tiber from the river mouth to the ponte di Tor Boacciana. To the north-east it meets the zona Z. XXXV Ostia Antica, separated by via di Tor Boacciana and via Guido Calza as far as via Ostiense. To the east it meets the zona Z. XXXIV Casal Palocco along via Ostiense, and then the quartiere Q. XXXIV Lido di Ostia Levante, separated by via Ostiense, viale Capitan Consalvo and viale della Marina as far as the rotonda at piazza dei Ravennati. To the south-west is the Tyrrhenian Sea, from that rotonda to the Tiber mouth.
The practical consequence is that a run of famous names falls outside the quartiere. The Pontile di Ostia, piazza Anco Marzio and piazza dei Ravennati, the Palazzo del Governatorato that seats Municipio X, the Villini Rossini, the church of Santa Maria Regina Pacis, the Borghetto dei Pescatori and the stations of Lido di Ostia Centro and Lido di Ostia Nord are all in Q. XXXIV Levante. The Pineta di Castel Fusano, the Villa della Palombara, piazzale Cristoforo Colombo with its Fontana dello Zodiaco, and the Kursaal and Vecchia Pineta bathing establishments are in Q. XXXV Lido di Castel Fusano. The excavated Roman city, the Museo Ostiense, the Castello di Giulio II and Borgo Gregoriopoli belong to the zona Z. XXXV Ostia Antica. Note the numeral trap while you are here: Q. XXXV is Lido di Castel Fusano and Z. XXXV is Ostia Antica, and they are two different units.
The quartiere was created by delibera 2453 of 13 September 1961, signed by the Commissario Straordinario Francesco Diana, which split the older Lido di Ostia quartiere in three; that older unit was officially instituted in 1940 and had existed since May 1933. Q. XXXIII lies in Municipio Roma X, and the zona urbanistica 13F Ostia Nord extends across its territory. One further body of coast has its own legal existence: the Riserva naturale statale Litorale Romano, a state nature reserve constituted by ministerial decree, covering 16,327 hectares across the comuni of Roma and Fiumicino, jointly managed by the two comuni and carrying the identifier EUAP0086.
Getting there
The Metromare, the former ferrovia Roma-Lido, runs from Rome to Ostia; the line reached Ostia Lido in 1924. The two stations named on this quartiere's own transport list, Lido di Ostia Nord and Lido di Ostia Centro, are placed by their own articles inside Q. XXXIV Lido di Ostia Levante. Steer by addresses instead.
Three addresses cover the river mouth. Via dell'Idroscalo is the access road for the site of the seaplane base, for the Centro Habitat Mediterraneo and for the Parco Letterario Pier Paolo Pasolini; LIPU gives the oasis as Via dell'Idroscalo, 00121 Lido di Ostia RM. Tor San Michele stands in a green area between via degli Atlantici and via dell'Idroscalo. Tor Boacciana is on via del Ponte di Tor Boacciana, about four kilometres from the river mouth. The marina is at Lungomare Duca degli Abruzzi 84, 00121, with a vehicle entrance from via del Porto di Roma, and the Biblioteca Elsa Morante is at that same address for the time being.
The inland strip runs on corso Duca di Genova and via Ostiense. The Ufficio postale is on piazzale della Posta at the corner of the two; the Palazzo dell'ex GIL is at Corso Duca di Genova 82, with a second frontage at via delle Sirene 79; the Scuola Fratelli Garrone is on corso Duca di Genova as well; the Teatro del Lido is at Via delle Sirene 22, inside the ex Colonia marina block off lungomare Paolo Toscanelli. Cineland is out at Viale dei Romagnoli 515, its facade turned toward the via del Mare.
Arriving by sea is a real option here. The Porto Turistico di Roma states that its berths take vessels from 8 to 60 metres, that its control tower works VHF channel 74 between 07.00 and 23.00, and that boats up to 20 metres staying at most two nights need no booking and should call the tower on that channel.
Opening hours and access
Three places here publish their own hours. LIPU states that the visitor centre of the Centro Habitat Mediterraneo opens on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 to 13.00 for information and for wildlife rescue; that on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 to 13.00 there is free access to the oasis; and that guided visits are possible on any day of the week if booked in advance. Biblioteche di Roma gives the Biblioteca Elsa Morante, at its substitute address in the Porto Turistico, as open Monday to Friday 09.00 to 19.00 and Saturday 09.00 to 13.00, closed on Sundays, for 2 January to 31 December 2026, with the telephone number 06 45460481. The Porto Turistico gives its office hours as 09.00 to 13.00 and 15.00 to 19.00, and its control tower as working VHF 74 from 07.00 to 23.00.
Tor San Michele is owned by the Soprintendenza Speciale Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Roma, which tendered its management; the tender was won in 2018 by the Associazione Culturale Quattro Sassi, which reopened the tower during 2021, and the tower's own article records that it can be visited by booking. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here. The same is true of Tor Boacciana, of the church of Santa Monica, and of the post office on piazzale della Posta, which is a working post office rather than a museum.
Two buildings cannot be entered at all. The Palazzo dell'ex GIL has stood empty since the school inside it closed in July 2009. The Scuola Fratelli Garrone is a working primary school, a secondary site of the Istituto Comprensivo Via Giuliano da Sangallo, and no public access is published for it; it is a building to look at from the street. The Teatro del Lido publishes its season through Roma Capitale's Teatri in Comune circuit rather than a standing timetable, and Cineland publishes its programme and ticketing on its own site.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this Rome's beach?
- Not the part of it people mean. Q. XXXIII Lido di Ostia Ponente is the western third of Ostia, at the mouth of the Tiber. The historic seafront belongs to its neighbours: the Pontile di Ostia, piazza Anco Marzio and the Palazzo del Governatorato are in Q. XXXIV Lido di Ostia Levante, and the pinewood, piazzale Cristoforo Colombo and the Kursaal and Vecchia Pineta bathing establishments are in Q. XXXV Lido di Castel Fusano. What Q. XXXIII gives a visitor is the river mouth, two coastal towers, a bird reserve and marina on the site of a seaplane base, and a strip of 1920s and 1930s civic architecture inland.
- Which railway station serves this quartiere?
- The Metromare, the former ferrovia Roma-Lido, runs from Rome to Ostia and reached Ostia Lido in 1924. The quartiere's own transport list names Lido di Ostia Nord and Lido di Ostia Centro, but both stations' own articles place them inside Q. XXXIV Lido di Ostia Levante. Navigate by street addresses: via dell'Idroscalo for the river mouth, corso Duca di Genova and via Ostiense for the inland strip, Lungomare Duca degli Abruzzi 84 for the marina and the library.
- Can Tor San Michele be visited?
- Its own article records that it can be visited by booking. The tower belongs to the Soprintendenza Speciale Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Roma, which took it over in 1994 and opened it exceptionally on 28 May 2017; the Soprintendenza then tendered its management, and the Associazione Culturale Quattro Sassi won the tender in 2018 and reopened the tower during 2021. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.
- Where is the Biblioteca Elsa Morante at the moment?
- Its normal home is inside the ex Colonia marina on lungomare Paolo Toscanelli, but it has been working from a substitute address since September 2025 while energy-efficiency works are carried out. Biblioteche di Roma prints that substitute address as Porto Turistico di Roma, Lungomare Duca degli Abruzzi 84, 00121 Roma, telephone 06 45460481, and gives hours for 2 January to 31 December 2026 of Monday to Friday 09.00 to 19.00 and Saturday 09.00 to 13.00, closed Sunday. The Fondo Ostia, its collection on the history and the natural and urban landscape of the Roman coast, is not on open shelves and has to be asked for at the desk.
- What is left of the Idroscalo?
- The seaplane base itself is gone: German forces destroyed the main structures in 1943, and what survived was absorbed into later works. The site is now shared by three things: the Porto Turistico di Roma, the Centro Habitat Mediterraneo run by LIPU, and the Parco Letterario Pier Paolo Pasolini on the place where Pasolini was killed in 1975. Tor San Michele, which the base enclosed in 1928 and used as a radio beacon, still stands between via degli Atlantici and via dell'Idroscalo. Turismo Roma records that the landscape is still marked by the bilancioni, the lift nets used for eel fishing.
- Is Tor Boacciana part of the Ostia Antica excavations?
- No. The tower stands on the bank of the Tiber in this quartiere, on via del Ponte di Tor Boacciana, and the quartiere's own article names it among its military structures. it.wikipedia records that it is managed by the Parco archeologico di Ostia antica, which is a statement about who runs it. The excavated Roman city and the Museo Ostiense are in the zona Z. XXXV Ostia Antica, a separate unit.
