Tor Boacciana

A medieval tower standing on Roman ruins on the bank of the Tiber, about four kilometres from the river mouth, at the edge of Roma Capitale's territory with the comune di Fiumicino. The quartiere's own article names it among its military structures. it.wikipedia records that it is managed by the Parco archeologico di Ostia antica. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.

History

The base of the tower is made of ruins of imperial Roman date, probably what remains of a lighthouse or a watchtower of the 2nd century, dated by the stamps on its brick and plausibly tied to the commerce of Porto. The tower above it is of about the twelfth century, and is identified with the solitary tower that Richard the Lionheart described. The Bovazzani family owned it, which is probably the source of the name. It was restored in 1406 under Innocent VII and in 1420 under Martin V, and served as the papal customs post from 1562 until 1568, when the customs moved to Tor San Michele. The Roman remains beneath the tower sometimes carry a separate entry as a faro romano; they are the same object and are treated here as one place.
