Fontana dei Leoni in piazza del Popolo
Historic site · Campo Marzio, Italy
The fountain that surrounds the obelisk at the centre of the square: four round travertine basins at the corners of the stepped base, each with a white marble Egyptian-style lion on a stepped truncated pyramid.
History
The Sovrintendenza gives the work to Giuseppe Valadier, 1762 to 1839, and dates it 1814 to 1828, in marble and travertine, originally fed by the acquedotto Vergine. It replaced the sixteenth-century fountain that had stood in the square, which was dismantled and later re-erected in piazza Nicosia. The Sovrintendenza records maintenance work in 2015.
