Gigi Proietti Globe Theatre Silvano Toti

The comune built it in 2003, in three months, from an idea of Gigi Proietti's and with finance from the Fondazione Silvano Toti, and it opened that year with Romeo e Giulietta directed by Proietti, who was artistic director for seventeen years until his death in 2020. On 3 November 2020 the mayor Virginia Raggi and the foundation announced that it would also carry Proietti's name. Nicola Piovani became artistic director in the summer of 2022. An archive was opened in 2020 with the foreign-languages department of Roma Tre. On the morning of 22 September 2022, at the end of a morning performance of Macbeth, the stair of the theatre's outermost ring collapsed and twelve people were injured, five adults and seven young people aged between fifteen and nineteen, most of them pupils of the Liceo Saffo of Roseto degli Abruzzi on a school trip; the theatre was sequestered for the investigation and the repairs, and the 2023 season played in an adjacent temporary arena of 860 seats.
