Ufficio postale di Ostia Lido
Historic site · Ostia Lido, Italy
The post office building on piazzale della Posta, at the corner of via Ostiense and corso Duca di Genova. A colonnaded portico rises off a travertine stair, the brick-clad colonnade carrying a circular travertine canopy around an open basin; the structure is reinforced concrete faced in fair-face brick alternating with travertine slabs, the interiors are tiled in light green, dark green, grey and blue, the caretaker's flat is painted in an orange called Arsonia, and the doors, windows and fittings are copper and anticorodal. In the basin stands a fountain in repousse copper by Napoleone Martinuzzi, 1892 to 1977, a Murano-born glass artist and sculptor, with the basin lined in blue Murano glass brick; it.wikipedia describes the figures as two double-tailed sirens holding cups of water above their heads, while ArchiDiAP, the source it.wikipedia cites, calls them two muses. The building still houses the Roma Ostia Lido post office, frazionario 55472. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.
History
Angiolo Mazzoni designed the building for the Ministero delle comunicazioni and it was inaugurated in 1934; ArchiDiAP independently dates the work to 1934. Mazzoni was chief engineer of the Ferrovie dello Stato and designed the post offices of Grosseto, Sabaudia, Littoria, now Latina, Palermo, La Spezia, Trento and Ostia. He co-signed the Manifesto futurista dell'architettura aerea with Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and joined the board of the review Futurismo-Sant'Elia, and both ArchiDiAP and it.wikipedia record that Marinetti visited the building at different times of day to watch the light in the portico. Martinuzzi also worked with Mazzoni on the post offices of Palermo and Gorizia and on Venice station. The office was originally the Ricevitoria Postelegrafonica di Ostia Lido, and it.wikipedia records that the 1934 plaque reading REGIE POSTE TELEGRAFI TELEFONI is still at the entrance.
