History
Excavated from 1804 and then sporadically through the nineteenth century. The four painted tombs found in 1865 are known as the Tombe dei Claudii, and their detached paintings are in the Musei Vaticani. Excavation resumed in 1934 and brought up about fifty burials. Tomb 18, the Sacerdotessa Isiaca, holds an Augustan stucco cycle, and tomb 32, Orfeo agli inferi, a well preserved painted cycle of birds and fruit on yellow and red grounds.
