Palazzo del Banco di Santo Spirito

Historic site · Ponte, Italy

The former papal mint, the Zecca Vecchia, which gives the street its name and stands at the heart of the Banchi quarter.

History

it.wikipedia records that Julius II ordered a monetary reform in 1504 and gave Bramante the job of adapting an existing building as the papal mint. The silver giulii, worth a tenth of the gold ducat, were struck here, along with coins and medals, some of them the work of Benvenuto Cellini. Leo X had Antonio da Sangallo the Younger build the facade, completed in 1524, whose slightly concave form drew comment.
