Piazza dell'Orologio

Historic site · Ponte, Italy

The square named after the clock on the tower of the Filippini convent, which stands over it. Palazzo Boncompagni Corcos and Palazzo Capponi Stampa both face it. Roma Capitale's street register records the square as lying in Ponte and in Parione; this guide writes the square and claims nothing on the convent, which is Parione's.

History

it.wikipedia records that Francesco Borromini built the clock tower in 1648 and that a Pietro da Cortona mosaic of the Madonna della Vallicella sits below the dial. Palazzo Bennicelli, on the square, was begun in 1660 to Borromini's design for Monsignor Virginio Spada, for the Banco di Santo Spirito.
