it.wikipedia records that the palace was built for Cardinal Giordano Orsini on his fortress on Monte Giordano; that it was later let to Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, who hosted Torquato Tasso there, and to Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy; and that it passed to the Gabrielli in 1688, who hosted members of the Bonaparte family, among them the Empress Eugenie and Cardinal Luciano-Luigi, who died there. The hill itself is known from the middle of the twelfth century as a fortified holding of Johannes Roncionis, and a bull of Alexander III of 1177 attests the church of Santa Maria in Monticello on it, belonging to the monastery of Sant'Elia di Falleri. In the following century it belonged to Stefano Petri de Monte, of the Stefaneschi, who held the Turris Maior on it. The Orsini took possession progressively between 1242 and 1262, and the hill is named after an Orsini Giordano.
