Palazzo Mattei di Giove

Historic site · Sant'Angelo, Italy

The Mattei palace that stands between via Michelangelo Caetani and via dei Funari, in the block of the Isola Mattei, and is also known as Antici Mattei and Mattei ai Funari.

History

The palace was built for Asdrubale Mattei, duke of Giove, and begun in 1598 to a design by Carlo Maderno; the linking wing was begun in 1613 and finished in 1618. The male Mattei di Giove line died out at the start of the 19th century and the palace passed to Marianna Mattei, wife of Carlo Teodoro Antici. it.wikipedia records four institutions in the building: the Biblioteca di storia moderna e contemporanea and the Istituto Centrale per i Beni Sonori e Audiovisivi, both of the Ministero della cultura, the Centro Studi Americani, and the Istituto storico italiano per l'età moderna e contemporanea.
