Palazzo Vidoni Caffarelli

A palace built for the Caffarelli in 1515, and the setting of the 1536 meeting between Paul III Farnese and Charles V. Roma Capitale states that the palace houses ministerial offices, is closed to the public and can be seen only from outside.

History

The Caffarelli sold the palace in 1767 to Cardinal Stoppani and it passed in 1816 to Cardinal Vidoni. In 1886, after the demolitions that widened Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, the new owner Carlo Giustiniani Bandini had Francesco Settimi rebuild the elevations on the corso and on piazza Vidoni and add a storey; the original sixteenth-century facade is the one on via del Sudario. The interiors include frescoes by Anton Raphael Mengs and by the school of Perin del Vaga. Before the Second World War the building housed the directorate of the Partito Nazionale Fascista.
