Theater · Sant'Eustachio, Italy
A theatre of 900 seats, owned by Roma Capitale and programmed by Teatro di Roma, which took the name of Franca Valeri in 2021. Its 2026/2027 season is published and opens from 16 to 18 October with Francesco Piccolo's La sera della prima. Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore al Teatro Valle.
History
it.wikipedia, which records the theatre as sited in the rione Sant'Eustachio, says the nobleman Camillo Capranica financed it and Tommaso Morelli designed it, and that it was inaugurated on 7 January 1727 with Simone Falconio Prato's tragedy Matilde; it was built entirely of timber in the Italian manner, with five tiers of boxes and a gallery. Mozart's Don Giovanni had its Roman premiere here in 1811, Rossini's La Cenerentola its world premiere in 1817 and Pirandello's Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore its premiere in 1921, with works by Donizetti in between. The theatre closed in 2010, was peacefully occupied by activists from 2011 to 2014, was transferred to Roma Capitale in 2016 and reopened in part in 2018.
