Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli

The church grew out of two Catalan hospitals, founded in 1354 by Jacoba Ferrandes and in 1363 by Margarida Pauli and merged in 1803; the confraternity under the patronage of Santa Maria di Monserrato was founded by Alexander VI in 1495. The first stone of the church was laid on 13 June 1518 and the design was entrusted to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, the work continuing under Bernardino Valperga and Francesco da Volterra. The high altar was consecrated in 1594 and the nave vault finished in 1598; the apse vault and a new high altar followed in 1675. The church was restored between 1818 and 1821 and reconsecrated in 1822.
