Santa Maria del Pianto

In 1546 an image of the Virgin frescoed on a wall of the Portico d'Ottavia was said to have wept at a murder committed in front of it; the fresco was detached and moved to the Santissimo Salvatore de Caccabariis. A confraternity took the name S. Maria del Pianto and began this church in 1612 to a design by Niccolò Sebregondi (1580–1652), leaving it unfinished. The standard with the Miracolo dell'immagine piangente and a Vergine in gloria are by Lazzaro Baldi (1624–1703), whose Madonna e Santi is in the right crossing.
