it.wikipedia records that the church was founded in the fourteenth century as the oratory of the German hospice, that the rebuilding was decided on for the Jubilee of 1500 and that the new church was consecrated in 1542. Johannes Burckardt, a member of the confraternity from 1489 and later its provost, wanted a northern European plan with side aisles the same height as the nave. The facade is by Andrea Sansovino, completed by Giuliano da Sangallo, and the campanile is attributed to Bramante. The funerary monument of Pope Adrian VI was made between 1524 and 1527 by Angelo di Mariano, called Michelangelo Senese, to a design by Baldassarre Peruzzi, at the commission of Cardinal Willem Enckenwoirt. The church was sacked under the Napoleonic occupation and its sacristy used as a stable; a seminary was instituted here in 1859.
