Chiesa di Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini

The Capuchin church on the lower part of via Veneto, and the reason the ossuary crypt beneath it is here. Roma Capitale records that it was built at the instance of the Capuchin cardinal Antonio Barberini, brother of Urban VIII, who blessed the first stone on 4 October 1626, to a design by the pontifical architect Michele da Bergamo with Antonio Casoni; Italian Wikipedia dates the construction 1626-1631. One nave, five chapels to a side, reached by a scissor stair, behind a brick façade with white stone pilasters. Roma Capitale records its dedication to the Immaculate Conception.

History

Cardinal Barberini's tomb is in front of the high altar, inscribed Hic jacet pulvis et cinis et nihil. Roma Capitale names the paintings: Guido Reni's San Michele Arcangelo, Pietro da Cortona's Anania che ridà la vista a San Paolo, Andrea Sacchi's Sant'Antonio da Padova resuscita un morto, Gherardo delle Notti's Cristo deriso, Lanfranco's Adorazione dei Pastori and Domenichino's San Francesco d'Assisi sorretto dall'Angelo; Italian Wikipedia dates Liborio Coccetti's Assunzione on the barrel vault to 1796. Italian Wikipedia records that the sacristy, now a museum, holds a San Francesco in meditazione recently attributed to Caravaggio. The attribution is recent and is not settled. The same article records that the friars' old convent was demolished in the 1920s to make room for the Ministry of Corporations, which is the Palazzo Piacentini also described in this guide, and that the convent was promptly rebuilt beside the church in 1925. Italian Wikipedia gives the church complex's official site as cappucciniviaveneto.it, a different domain from the museum's.
