Chiesa dei Santi Simone e Giuda

Historic site · Ponte, Italy

Permanently closed. This page is kept for reference.

A deconsecrated medieval church at the top of a flight of steps on via di San Simone. It cannot be entered.

History

it.wikipedia records a twelfth-century building consecrated by Paschal II, who reigned from 1099 to 1118, and again by Innocent II in 1143, whose inscription survives in the fabric. It was originally Santa Maria in Monticellis, after Monte Giordano, and took the apostles' dedication only from the middle of the sixteenth century. It was deconsecrated in 1902 and afterwards divided into housing, the Alcazar cinema, a restaurant, and finally a theatre, the Teatro dei Coronari, which has been closed since 2006.
