Torre dei Conti

The Sovrintendenza Capitolina states that the Torre dei Conti was built by Pope Innocent III Conti (1198–1216) around 1203 for his brother Riccardo, as a fortified residence for himself and his family. It stood about 60 metres high. After earthquake damage and further collapses in the seventeenth century it was reduced to its present height and turned into a timber store and hayloft. Its cellars incorporate one of the four squared-tufa exedrae of the Forum of Peace (71–75 AD).
