Vestry House Museum, on Vestry Road, E17 9NH, is closed for redevelopment. Its own site states that the museum 'is currently closed for redevelopment. We are due to reopen in 2026', and gives no date. The redevelopment, by the architects Studio Weave, began in 2023. The building is listed Grade II as NHLE 1191188 and stands inside the Walthamstow Village Conservation Area, designated by the borough in 1967.
History
The building was put up in 1730 as the parish workhouse for Walthamstow and afterwards served as a police station, an armoury, a builder's merchant's store and a private house. It opened to the public as a local history museum in 1931. The museum holds the Bremer car, built by Frederick Bremer in 1892 and given to the museum in 1933, claimed as the first British motor car with an internal combustion engine. The Grade II listing was made on 19 October 1951 as list entry 1191188, under the statutory name 'Walthamstow Museum (Vestry House)', at grid reference TQ 37778 89118; Wikidata carries the same list entry number against the building. Walthamstow Central station is 554 m away.
