William Morris Gallery

The Grade II* listing was made on 19 October 1951 as list entry 1065620, under the statutory name 'The Water House, Lloyd Park (William Morris Gallery)'. William Morris lived in the house with his family from 1848 to 1856, from the age of fourteen; the newspaper proprietor Edward Lloyd bought it in 1856 and his son gave house and grounds to Walthamstow in 1900. The gallery opened in 1950 and was inaugurated by Clement Attlee, then Prime Minister, and it won the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year in 2013. A refurbishment costing £3.023 million was completed in 2012, funded by £1.523 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £1.5 million from the London Borough of Waltham Forest, and produced nine permanent exhibition rooms. A K6 telephone kiosk outside on Forest Road is separately listed Grade II, NHLE 1357624, on 15 September 1987. Walthamstow Central station is 794 m to 798 m away.
