Lewisham, London: St Paul's Deptford, the Horniman Museum and Beckenham Place Park

Deptford is the riverside dockyard quarter and New Cross the university district above it. Thomas Archer's St Paul's on Deptford Church Street is Grade I, NHLE 1080003, listed on 5 July 1950, with an inception of 1730 and a grid reference of TQ 37286 77480. Two further Grade II entries cover its enclosure: the walls and railings to the north and east, NHLE 1080004, and the walls of the former graveyard to the demolished Old Baptist Chapel, NHLE 1080002.

Albury Street runs immediately behind the church and carries twelve separate NHLE entries on one short street, ten of them Grade II* and two Grade II. Number 17, NHLE 1079072, was listed on 19 October 1951 at grid reference TQ 37209 77597; numbers 39 and 41 are NHLE 1358922 and number 45 is NHLE 1217928, both Grade II. The houses date largely from 1705 to 1717 and were taken by naval captains and shipwrights. The street was formerly called Union Street. The houses are lived in and the street is walked.

The Royal Dockyard at Deptford was established in 1513 by Henry VIII. It was largely shut down from 1830 to 1837, with only shipbreaking carried out, reopened for shipbuilding in 1844 and closed as a dockyard on 31 March 1869. The Master Shipwright's House on Watergate Street survives from it, Grade II, NHLE 1213984, listed on 3 February 1993 at grid reference TQ 37213 78123, with the adjacent former dockyard office building separately Grade II, NHLE 1288808. The site is now known as Convoys Wharf: twenty-one acres of it opened as the City of London Corporation's Foreign Cattle Market on 28 December 1871, and in October 1914 the ground became a Supply Reserve Depot for the Army Service Corps. The house is a private residence and its exterior is seen from Watergate Street.

Goldsmiths, University of London dates from 1891 and is spread across several of the quarter's buildings. The main college building on Lewisham Way is Grade II, NHLE 1193404, listed on 12 March 1973, and the college chapel is Grade II in its own right, NHLE 1079991. The former Deptford Town Hall on New Cross Road, listed as "Former Deptford Town Hall, with dwarf wall and railings to north", is Grade II*, NHLE 1193691, listed on 5 July 1950 at grid reference TQ 36369 76971, and is now part of Goldsmiths. The former Laurie Grove Baths on Laurie Grove, SE14 6NH, are Grade II, NHLE 1252985, listed on 10 June 1991, and are in use as art studios. The Ben Pimlott Building carries no National Heritage List entry.

The Albany on Douglas Way, SE8 4AG, is an arts centre, registered charity number 1112521, which also runs Deptford Lounge at Giffin Street, SE8 4RJ. The operator states that it is open Monday to Saturday and publishes no times, so none are given here. Telegraph Hill Park, in the New Cross Gate area, is split into an upper and a lower park either side of Kitto Road.

This is the eastern side of the borough, running along the Greenwich border and down through Lee to Lewisham town centre. Blackheath village carries the postcode SE3 0DE, and Blackheath station stands in Lewisham. The two Grade II K6 telephone kiosks outside Blackheath Post Office, NHLE 1080770 and NHLE 1358089, both listed on 22 June 1987, stand on the Lewisham side. The heath and the village straddle the boundary, and Blackheath Concert Hall (NHLE 1213763), the Blackheath Conservatoire of Music (NHLE 1213950), the Blackheath Art Club (NHLE 1246342) and the Blackheath School of Art (NHLE 1288926) all stand in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

At Lee, Manor House Gardens is a Grade II registered park and garden, NHLE 1000821, recorded by Historic England at 4.12 hectares. The Manor House at its centre carries the list entry name "Lee Public Library", Grade II*, NHLE 1079968, listed on 30 August 1954 at grid reference TQ 39362 75052, with an inception of 1771 and Richard Jupp as architect. The gate piers are separately Grade II, NHLE 1193741; a K2 telephone kiosk outside the house is Grade II in its own right, NHLE 1252858; and a wall with the entrance to an underground ice house nearby is Grade II, NHLE 1079953.

Boone's Chapel stands on Lee High Road, list entry name "Boone's Chapel (with short abutting wall to east)", Grade I, NHLE 1079981, listed on 30 August 1954 at grid reference TQ 39248 75209, with an inception of 1680. The Monument to Christopher Boone stands in Lee Old Churchyard and is separately Grade II, NHLE 1391995. The chapel opens on limited days and no source states which, so none are given here.

Lewisham's parish church, St Mary the Virgin on Lewisham High Street, SE13 6LE, is Grade II, NHLE 1193297, listed on 30 August 1954 at grid reference TQ 37941 74833. The walls surrounding the churchyard are Grade II, NHLE 1079989, and St Mary's Vicarage is Grade II in its own right, NHLE 1286235.

Forest Hill is a hilltop suburb with long northward views over the city from its ridge, and the Horniman Museum and Gardens at 100 London Road, SE23 3PQ, is what a morning here is built around. The museum building is Grade II*, NHLE 1079996, listed on 12 March 1973, with an inception of 1901 and Charles Harrison Townsend as architect. Two further Grade II entries cover its setting, both listed on the same day: the forecourt railings, walls and piers, NHLE 1079997, and the terraces in front of the museum, NHLE 1286142. The gardens are separately a Grade II registered park and garden, NHLE 1000813, recorded by Historic England at 6.77 hectares.

The operator states: "The Museum and Gardens are free to visit. There is a charge to visit the Aquarium, Butterfly House, and some of our events and exhibitions." The museum opens 10am to 5.30pm, the Butterfly House 10.30am to 4pm, and the gardens from 7.15am, or 8am on Sundays and Bank Holidays, to 7.30pm.

On Dartmouth Road, Forest Hill Library carries the list entry name "Forest Hill Public Library", Grade II, NHLE 1261992, listed on 3 November 1993 at grid reference TQ 35214 72550, with an inception of 1900. It belongs to a group of Lewisham libraries that also carry entries: Lewisham Public Library, NHLE 1261963, and Hither Green Library, NHLE 1253133. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.

Catford holds the borough's civic centre and its theatre. The Broadway Theatre on Rushey Green, SE6 4RU, carries the list entry name "Lewisham Theatre and Department of Environmental Service", Grade II, NHLE 1253065, listed on 21 December 1993 at grid reference TQ 37665 73667; that single entry covers the theatre together with the attached council building. The operator describes the theatre as "Serving The Community Since 1932". No source states its box-office hours, so none are given here.

Behind a shopfront on Brockley Road at Crofton Park, the Rivoli Ballroom at number 350, SE4 2BY, is Grade II, NHLE 1392344, listed on 21 December 2007 at grid reference TQ 36455 74756, with an opening date of 12 July 1913. It runs as an events venue rather than a daytime walk-in.

Beckenham Place Park closes the borough at its southern end. The operator describes it as "96 hectares of stunning beauty and facilities for all to enjoy" and lists a swimming lake, nature trails, playgrounds, and a BMX and skate park among its facilities; the park is managed by the London Borough of Lewisham and its published hours are "All Day", Monday to Sunday. Beckenham Place Mansion is Grade II*, NHLE 1359317, listed on 28 May 1954 at grid reference TQ 37859 70706. The stable block, outbuildings and garden walls are Grade II, NHLE 1080027, and the north lodges Grade II, NHLE 1358477. The park straddles the Lewisham and Bromley boundary; the mansion, the stable block and the north lodges are inside Lewisham, and the postcode BR3 1SY belongs to Lewisham, Bellingham ward, despite its Bromley postal district. The park itself carries no entry on Historic England's register of parks and gardens.

Lewisham is served by National Rail, the DLR and the Overground. Lewisham Rail Station (naptanId 910GLEWISHM) takes Southeastern and Thameslink services, Lewisham DLR Station (940GZZDLLEW) stands beside it, and Elverson Road (940GZZDLELV) is a further DLR station in the borough. TfL returns the Overground line through Forest Hill, Sydenham, New Cross, New Cross Gate and Honor Oak Park under its post-2024 name, Windrush.

For Deptford and New Cross, catch Southeastern or Thameslink to Deptford, which TfL measures at 158 m from St Paul's; the DLR to Deptford Bridge; Southeastern to St Johns; Southeastern or the Windrush line to New Cross; or Southern or the Windrush line to New Cross Gate, 236 m from the former Deptford Town Hall and 365 m from Telegraph Hill Park. New Cross and New Cross Gate each lie within about 400 m of the Goldsmiths campus.

For Blackheath, Lee and Lewisham, take Southeastern or Thameslink to Blackheath (910GBLKHTH), the one rail station within 1,000 m of the village centre at 107 m. Southeastern to Hither Green is 651 m from Manor House Gardens and 696 m from Boone's Chapel, with Blackheath 1,036 m and Lee 1,041 m from Manor House Gardens. Southeastern to Ladywell is 252 m from St Mary the Virgin; Lewisham DLR is 1,097 m from the church and Lewisham Rail Station 1,198 m.

For Forest Hill and Sydenham, take Southern or the Windrush line to Forest Hill, 481 m from the Horniman and 516 m from Forest Hill Library, or to Sydenham.
