Greenwich, London: Cutty Sark, the Old Royal Naval College and the prime meridian

The riverside core of Greenwich sits inside the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, NHLE 1000096, whose core area covers 109.51 hectares and whose buffer zone covers 174.91 hectares. Cutty Sark stands in a dry berth at King William Walk, Grade I listed as NHLE 1079013, with the hull raised so that visitors walk beneath it; she opens daily 10am to 5pm except on 24, 25 and 26 December, and adult admission is £22. The Old Royal Naval College fills four separately listed quarters, all Grade I from 8 June 1973 — King William's, NHLE 1211426, which holds the Painted Hall, Queen Mary's, NHLE 1211384, which holds the Chapel, King Charles, NHLE 1211337, and Queen Anne's, NHLE 1290044. Its grounds open 8am to 11pm and are free; the Painted Hall opens 10am to 5pm at £19 for adults, and talks about it run every half hour from 11am to 4pm. The Queen's House stands on the axis between the college and Greenwich Park, joined to the National Maritime Museum's wings by colonnades. Both are free and open 10am to 5pm, and Yinka Shonibare's Nelson's Ship in a Bottle stands outside the museum on its south side.

Greenwich Market trades every day from 10am to 5.30pm on College Approach, established in 1737 by the market's own account and now, spread across two sites, over 120 shops and stalls. Its entrance arch is Grade II listed, NHLE 1358951, and the terraces around it carry their own entries at 9-21 College Approach, NHLE 1358952, 2-5 College Approach, NHLE 1079030, and 8A and 8B College Approach, NHLE 1079033. On Greenwich Church Street the parish church of St Alfege, Grade I listed as NHLE 1358970, opens Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 4pm, with free recitals at 1.05pm on Thursdays and Saturdays. In Cutty Sark Gardens the domed entrance building to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel, Grade II listed as NHLE 1289371, opens onto a free pedestrian route under the Thames to Island Gardens in Tower Hamlets; the Royal Borough of Greenwich publishes the tunnel and lift status and states that cycling through the tunnel is not permitted.

Greenwich Peninsula is the loop of the Thames north of the town, rebuilt around The O2 on Peninsula Square: an arena with a cinema, restaurants and bars under a tented roof, open daily 10am to 10pm, with the venues inside keeping their own hours. North Greenwich, the Jubilee line station serving it, is 295 m from the arena by TfL's measure, and North Greenwich Pier, on river-bus routes RB1 and RB6, is 412 m.

Greenwich Park is a Royal Park registered at Grade I on 1 October 1987, NHLE 1000174, with a registered area of 74.51 hectares that lies wholly within the core area of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, NHLE 1000096. Pedestrian gates open 6am to 8pm and vehicle gates 7am to 8pm, and Blackheath Gate, St Mary's Gate and Park Row Gate are among them. Two scheduled monuments lie inside the park, a Romano-Celtic temple, NHLE 1021439, and an Anglo-Saxon cemetery, NHLE 1021440; scheduled monuments carry no grade. The boundary wall around the park is Grade II listed, NHLE 1290730, and the Standard Reservoir conduit house within it is Grade II*, NHLE 1393455.

On Blackheath Avenue inside the park stands the Royal Observatory, whose buildings carry six list entries: Flamsteed House, the former Great Equatorial Building, the Transit House and the wall and clock to the right of the entrance gates at Grade I, NHLE 1358976, 1078998, 1220877 and 1220888, and the South Building and the Altazimuth Pavilion at Grade II, NHLE 1244325 and 1031860. The observatory is also a scheduled monument covering 0.53 hectares, NHLE 1002036, its entry amended on 9 October 2024. It opens daily except on 24, 25 and 26 December, 10am to 5pm for most of the year with last entry at 4.15pm, and 10am to 6pm in September with last entry at 5pm; adult admission is £24. The Grade II statue of General Wolfe, NHLE 1358977, stands immediately east of it.

Blackheath is divided between two boroughs and the boundary runs across the heath. Ranger's House, Grade I listed as NHLE 1218679, stands on Chesterfield Walk against the western edge of Greenwich Park facing the heath and holds the Wernher Collection; English Heritage opens it on select dates only and takes bookings online or on 020 8853 0035. Blackheath village and Blackheath Rail Station are in the London Borough of Lewisham. TfL measures 474 m from the heath at 51.4700, 0.0100 to Blackheath station, and 1,054 m from Ranger's House, against 1,079 m to Greenwich and 1,105 m to Maze Hill.

East and south of the park the borough carries listed buildings rather than institutions. Charlton House stands on Charlton Road at SE7 7TH, Grade I listed as NHLE 1218593, with three further Grade I entries on the same site: the garden house to the north-west, now a public lavatory, NHLE 1291892, the gateway on the axis west of the house, NHLE 1358935, and the stable buildings to the south-west, NHLE 1079066. It is in use as a community and library building with a cafe. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.

At Woolwich the Royal Arsenal carries the Royal Brass Foundry, Grade I listed as NHLE 1078956, with the Grand Store ranges, NHLE 1078958, the Board Room, NHLE 1359015, and the Dial Square entrance range, NHLE 1211005, at Grade II. The foundry is not routinely open to visitors and is seen from outside. Woolwich Town Hall on Wellington Street is Grade II listed, NHLE 1289668, a working council building whose Victoria Hall opens to the public only occasionally, and the Granada Cinema on Powis Street is Grade II, NHLE 1212651. On Woolwich Common the Rotunda, the former Royal Artillery Museum building, is Grade II, NHLE 1078987, as are the Royal Artillery Barracks main building, NHLE 1078918, and the Royal Military Academy main building, NHLE 1358936.

At Eltham the medieval Great Hall of Eltham Palace, Grade I listed as NHLE 1079041, carries the Grade II house of the 1930s built onto it, NHLE 1212906, in gardens registered at Grade II on 2 December 1998, NHLE 1001410, covering 8.27 hectares, over a scheduled monument of 5.40 hectares, NHLE 1014833. The moat crossings are Grade I: the north bridge, NHLE 1218925, and the remains of the south bridge, NHLE 1358958. English Heritage publishes no standard hours for the palace and directs visitors to 020 8294 2548 or 0370 333 1181. On Shooters Hill, Severndroog Castle in Castle Wood is Grade II* listed as NHLE 1289792, with a start date of 1784 recorded in OpenStreetMap; its tea room opens Thursday to Sunday 9am to 3.30pm and its viewing platform and galleries on Sundays 10am to 3pm, with last entry at 2.45pm.

Greenwich is served by the DLR, the Jubilee line, the Elizabeth line, Southeastern and Thameslink national rail, Uber Boat river-bus routes RB1 and RB6, the Woolwich Ferry and the London Cable Car. There is no tube other than the Jubilee line at North Greenwich.

For the town centre, take the DLR to Cutty Sark (for Maritime Greenwich), which TfL puts 146 m from Greenwich Market, or a Southeastern or Thameslink train to Greenwich, 438 m, whose DLR platforms are 458 m. Greenwich Pier, on RB1 and RB6, is 295 m. Maze Hill is 845 m from the market and 682 m from the Royal Observatory, and Cutty Sark DLR is 856 m from the observatory, uphill through the park. From the north bank, walk through the Greenwich Foot Tunnel from Island Gardens DLR station, which TfL puts 652 m from the tunnel's south entrance building and 758 m from Cutty Sark DLR station.

For the Peninsula, take the Jubilee line to North Greenwich, 295 m from The O2, or the London Cable Car, which shares the same interchange, naptanId HUBNGW. North Greenwich Pier is 412 m away on RB1 and RB6. TfL also returns bus routes 108, 129, 132, 161, 180, 188, 335, 422, 486, N472 and SL11 at North Greenwich.

For Woolwich, take the Elizabeth line to Woolwich, or the DLR, Southeastern or Thameslink to Woolwich Arsenal; TfL gives 265 m between the two stations. Woolwich Town Hall is 374 m from Woolwich Arsenal, 577 m from Woolwich Elizabeth line station and 690 m from Woolwich Dockyard. Woolwich Arsenal Pier is 585 m on RB1 and RB6 and the Woolwich Ferry south pier 749 m. For Charlton House, take Southeastern or Thameslink to Charlton, 856 m away. For Eltham Palace, Mottingham is 768 m on Southeastern and Eltham 1,011 m on Southeastern and Thameslink; Eltham is also the nearest station to Severndroog Castle at 1,265 m, with Falconwood 1,540 m. Blackheath Rail Station, 474 m from the heath, is in the London Borough of Lewisham.
