Arco di Sisto V (arco Felice)

Historic site · Esquilino, Italy

A commemorative arch at piazzale Sisto V, built into the Acqua Felice aqueduct where its final stretch runs over the Aurelian Walls, at the crossing of the two roads that led to Santa Maria Maggiore and to Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. Its own article's lead places it «nel rione Esquilino».

History

The arch was made in 1585, in the first year of Sixtus V's pontificate, celebrating the completion of the Acqua Felice. It is known as the arco Felice «dal nome di battesimo del papa committente, Felice Peretti» — from the baptismal name of the pope who commissioned it.
