Centro Habitat Mediterraneo
Park · Ostia Lido, Italy
A nature reserve run by LIPU on the site of the former seaplane base, built around a reconstructed coastal wetland. LIPU's own figures give the site as 20 hectares, instituted in 2001, with 219 bird species recorded. A nature trail reaches three large wooden hides and structures for wildlife photography; there is an open-air classroom, and the Mario Pastore visitor centre is a wooden chalet in the car park of the Porto Turistico. The Porto Turistico's own page adds three modern Skua hides and a butterfly garden. Purple heron breeds here. LIPU states that the visitor centre opens on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 to 13.00 for information and for wildlife rescue; that on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 to 13.00 there is free access to the oasis; and that guided visits can be booked on any day of the week.
History
LIPU records that the centre was made on the ground of a former open-air dump, on the site where Pier Paolo Pasolini was killed. The Porto Turistico's page describes the same ground as a naturalistic centre of more than 20 hectares laid out where an open-air dump had been, created alongside the marina in the regeneration of the Idroscalo area.
