Chiesa di Santa Monica

A parish church on piazza di Santa Monica, built to a Latin-cross plan with a reinforced-concrete structure, the crossing marked by the intersection of the four main beams that carry the ceiling, and a portico linking the church to the rest of the parish complex. It is dedicated to Monica of Tagaste, who died at Ostia. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.

History

The parish began as a vicecura in January 1956 and was erected as a parish on 13 November 1958 by the decree Romanus Pontifex of the Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara. Work on the church began on 13 June 1968, the feast of Corpus Domini, with Paul VI present to bless the foundation stone; Ernesto Vichi designed it. It was opened on the evening of 7 December 1972 by Remigio Ragonesi, auxiliary bishop of Rome, and consecrated on 22 December 1973. John Paul II visited the parish on 8 May 1983, and Francis on 3 June 2018, for the Corpus Domini mass at Ostia.
